Buying a first camera for someone else? Start with how they want to take photographs. This small selection brings together 35mm point-and-shoot film cameras and compact digital cameras to compare. Read each item's condition notes and included accessories before choosing: a first camera should suit the person, not just look good in the wrapping.

Film or digital for a beginner?
- 35mm film: for someone who likes the process of loading a roll, taking a limited number of pictures and waiting for the results. Allow for film and developing each roll. Read the camera instructions before loading.
- Compact digital: for someone who wants to see pictures on the camera and avoid film-processing costs. Check the exact battery, charger, compatible memory card and a way to move photographs to their computer or phone. Do not assume wireless transfer.
First-camera gift checklist and questions
What is included, and what might I need separately?
The individual listing and photographs show the supplied accessories. Film cameras may need film and a model-specific battery; digital cameras may need a battery, charger, compatible memory card and card reader or cable. A case or charger mentioned in a title does not mean every other essential is included. Ask us to confirm the exact requirements before ordering if you are unsure.
Are these cameras tested and ready to use?
Read the test notes for the exact item. Testing is not the same as being supplied with every accessory, and a functional check is not automatically a film test or a service. We do not describe this selection as a complete starter kit. Check the cosmetic condition in the photographs too.
Can any film be used?
No. The film choices in this selection are listed as 35mm. APS, 110, 126 and medium-format cameras use different formats and should not be bought with ordinary 35mm film. If the format is unclear, ask before ordering.
How much should I set aside beyond the camera?
Keep part of your budget for the essentials the listing does not include. Film has ongoing film-and-processing costs; digital may need storage, power or transfer accessories. Check current costs for those exact items before spending your whole budget on the camera.
Would an SLR be a better first camera?
An SLR can suit someone who wants to learn camera settings and interchangeable lenses, but it is not automatically the simplest gift. For that route, read our film photography guides and beginner camera guide, then confirm the lens and power requirements of the individual camera.
Can I get help choosing or returning a gift?
Contact us for gift-choice help. You can request a return within 30 days of receiving your item; there is no separate extended Christmas return period. Read the full returns terms and delivery information. No Christmas arrival guarantee is made on this page.
